Hubei province
| Hubei Site of the great industrial city and river port of wuhan, slashed through by the Yanzi River and its many tributaries, and supporting a population of almost 50 million, Hubei is still one of China¡®s most important provinces.The province actually comprises two quite different areas. The eastern two-thirds is a low-lying plain drained by the Yangzi River and its main northern tributary, the Han River The Western third is a area of rugged higlands with small cultivated calleys and basins dividing Hubei from Sichuan. The plain was selttled by the Han Chinese in 1000BC. Around the 7th century it was intensively settled and by the 11th it was producing a rice surplus. In the late 9th century it was the first area in the Chinese interior to undergo considerable industrialisation . Wuhan the capital city og Hubei with a population of over 6.9 million, Wuhan is one of China¡®s largest metropolises.It¡®s actually a conglomeration of what were once three independent cities: Hankou.Hanyang and wuchan.Wuchan was established during the Han Dynasty,became a regional captial under the Yuan and is now the site of privincial government. it used to be a walled city but the walls have long since gone.Hankou is a prosperous business district and realy began to expand and became the major industrial center in the interior China. There are five foreign concession areas in Hankou. all grouped around present-day Zhongshan Lu. Many of the European-style buildings from the concession era have remained,particularly along yangjiang Dadao in north-east part of town. Government offices now occupy what were once the foreign banks,department stores and private residents.Hanyan has been outstripped by neighbouring Hankou and today is the small est municipality It dates back to 600AD, when a town first developed on the site. During the second half of the 19th century it was developed for heavy industry,and now light industry has been the main actvity. |
