Monument of Red Army
Monument to the Red Army Chuanzhu Temple Town, 40 km from the Yellow Dragon Pond in the east, is a rising town of Songpan County. To its northwest is the Wetland Grassland; 104 km to its north is the Jiuzaigou Scenic Wonder; 17 km to its south is the ancient town of Songpan County. Standing atop Yuanbaoshan Mountain in the town area is the Monument to the Red Army¡¯s Long March, featuring giant sculptures and a solemn memorial hall, which combine to form the Memorial Monument Park. The park measures 620 meters from east to west, and 2,371 meters from south to north, with a total area of 230,000 square meters. On the front side of the monument is the gilded name of the park written by the late Deng Xiaoping. As the only monument dedicated to the Long March, its construction lasted from 1987 to August 1990. It rises 413 meters, with the base alone 25 meters high. The bronze statues of the Red Army soldiers are 148 meters tall. The monument takes the shape of a triangular column, signifying unity of the major elements, 1, 2 and 3, of the Red Army. The monument body is adorned with 450 bronze tiles. The upper part has three shining red stars inlaid on each of the three sides. The base has four sides adorned with marble bricks, with the extension of the base paved with green bricks. This is intended to mean the ¡°golden monument has been erected in the grasslands against the backdrop of snowy mountains.¡± Red Army soldiers in the sculpture form a V shape with both arms, with rifles in one hand and flowers in the other. Other sculptures built along the western slope of the Yuanbaoshan Mountain each measure 10 meters high and 90 meters long, showing how the Red Army troops left the Soviet area, experienced hardships during the Long March, forged close links with people in the grassland area etc. They are formed with more than 1,300 pieces of granite slabs. The monument was erected to mark the heroic actions of the Red Army and the love of the people in the area through which the Red Army troops passed. |
